Whenever I see an author talk about their books as they’re working on it, asking questions like “should I make this a vampire story, or a zombie story?” I know right then and there I don’t want to read their book. If the story doesn’t organically TELL THEM what it is, then they’re shoehorning whatever “trend” they think will sell the book into the story.
When I write, the story doesn’t let me put it into different clothes. It comes out naked, like a newborn, with an attitude and whip to make me tell it like it wants to be told.
